I will start this talk by giving some historical remarks on the contributions to atomic and molecular physics given by the department of Physics, Uppsala university. Some elements of X-ray and photoelectron spectroscopies are then highlighted. Earlier achievements in X-ray absorption spectroscopy are commented and recent results are presented for that spectroscopy when applied to molecular ions. Rich such spectra are analyzed in terms of electronic structure theory, role of localization and electron correlation effects. Computational theory is mentioned in that connection. In the latter part of the talk I go very shortly through some experimental achievements at the department in liquid jet technology and applications, in XPS – Auger coincidence techniques and in the use of the European X-ray free electron laser in Hamburg. Future directions in pump-probe and attosecond ultrafast science are commented.
